Join Sam & Jenny for a discussion of their pottery (Friday June 19 7:30 - 8:30) followed by a demonstration workshop on Saturday June 20, 10 - 4:30
Sam and Jenny Dowd work as potters and sculptors at their studio in Alpine, Wyoming. During the workshop they will divide their time between throwing, trimming and decorating. Sam will use stoneware and porcelain to demonstrate his loose throwing methods, pushing forms to the point of collapse in order to highlight an asymmetry not often found in utilitarian wheel-thrown pots. Sam will also demonstrate how he decorates using clay applied to the surface of the pots, carving into and building sculptural surfaces. He will also demonstrate an after glazing method of drawing with underglaze onto the surface of post-fired pieces. Jenny throws with porcelain, creating forms that belong together through surface conversations. Some of these interactions are humorous while others focus on pattern and line. She likes to think that pottery has secret conversations when put away in cupboards. Her surface demonstrations will address techniques such as sgraffito, after glaze drawings and decals created from ink drawings. Both artists will talk about their influences, studio practices as well as the evolution of their home business, Dowd House Studios.
